IT’S simply unAustrayian. The city of Logan, on Brisbane’s outskirts, has banned bogans.

The council has lined up local celebs, like pop star Darren Hayes and Olympian Steven Bradbury, to star in a $300,000 advertising blitz.

But the mayor doesn’t want to include supermodel Catherine McNeil, who once called herself the “Bogan from Logan”.

“We want to change the perception of Logan,” Mayor Pam Parker said.

In the words of Logan resident Spanky on news.com.au, “Perhaps spending money on roads, infrastructure and employment would be better. Alas, I guess, for a half-educated bogan, the proposed campaign makes rooly good cents.”

But the 19-year-old McNeil, dubbed “fashion’s latest crush” by the New York Times, is out and proud as a bogan.

“It’s pretty hard to find Versace in Logan,” McNeil said.

“I didn’t even know how to say it properly. I shopped at Supre and City Beach.”

This refreshingly down-to-earth and ethereally beautiful woman is now among the world’s top 12 models, gracing the catwalks of Milan, Paris and New York. With her Amazonian limbs, silky hair and straight, white teeth, she’s not your average bogan.

According to bogan.com.au, the species can usually be characterised by a “pronounced lack of dress sense (flanelette shirt, soiled jeans and black thongs/ugg boots), a lack of personal hygiene (the most common fragrance is Odour of Toilet), a particular choice in motor vehicle (Holden or Ford), and the ubiquitous mullet hairstyle.

But the bogan has undergone a Mao-style Cultural Revolution.

Ugg boots are suddenly cool, popularised by world-famous bogan Pamela Anderson, and the mullet is tres chic (although the pronunciation is now “mull-AY”).

Locals in Penrith, Logan’s spiritual cousin, have set up a website where those from the “riff” can take a quiz to determine “how ‘Penriff’ are you?”

Some of Australia’s best-known personalities are from Bogan-villes.

Eddy McGuire makes much of his rough and tumble upbringing in Broadmeadows, on the northern outskirts of Melbourne.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley and swimmer Geoff Huegill hail from Redcliffe (otherwise known as ‘Redneck’), Logan’s sister city on the other side of Bris-Vegas.

I, too, have fond memories of growing up there. To this day, Dad still drives a Ford – he wouldn’t be seen dead in a Holden.

Bogan Idol is about to hit our screens, from the creators of Fat Pizza.

Parker needs to get with the script and embrace her inner-bogan when councillors decide on the Catherine McNeil ad.

Her colleague Sean Black remains defiant. “Catherine McNeil isn’t scared to shout about being a bogan from Logan, so why should we be?”

LOGAN’S most famous fashionista has pledged her support for her old hometown, agreeing to be part of the new city image advertising campaign.
International supermodel Catherine McNeil will feature in ads as part of a Logan City Council $120,000 blitz to promote Logan.
McNeil will join other famous Logan identities such as singer Darren Hayes and Olympic gold medallist Steven Bradbury.
The campaign’s official aim is to improve the perception of the city and attract business investment by highlighting its unique characteristics in contrast with neighbouring cities.
The $120,000 budget will be spent on billboards, television, print, radio and cinema advertising.
The campaign will start in February and run for three months and will be launched at a function at the Logan Art Gallery.
The theme of the city image campaign will be “Who Knew’’ structured around little known facts about people and places within the city.
Mayor Pam Parker said the campaign was a great opportunity to showcase the positive efforts being made to strengthen the image of the city.
A council spokeswoman confirmed McNeil would be involved in the campaign, but would not specify what aspect she would be involved in as the details were not finalised.

THERE’S a golden rule behind a new $300,000 campaign to boost Logan’s image – don’t mention the word “bogan”.

The Queensland city’s council has lined up an array of local celebrities, such as pop star Darren Hayes and Olympian Steven Bradbury, to star in its new advertising blitz.

But there’s a big question mark over whether or not to include supermodel Catherine McNeil, who proudly describes herself as “the bogan from Logan”.

Logan has long been the butt of bogan jokes because the two words form a convenient rhyme but Mayor Pam Parker said it was time for the city to shake off its downmarket image.

“We want to change the external perception of Logan,” she said.

”Including the word bogan in a campaign like this will only reinforce a negative message in people’s minds.”

During the next 20 years, 200,000 people are expected to move into the region and it is hoped the campaign will attract business investors.

The council believes the city is now coming of age, with award-winning restaurants and popular shopping areas.

The Logan campaign will be launched across the southeast next month and will feature a new city song.

A council spokeswoman told The Courier-Mail that councillors would decide on the Catherine McNeil ad later this month.

Cr Sean Black, who has driven the campaign, said it was a fuss about nothing.

“I don’t care if our image is that we are bogans,” he said.

”Catherine McNeil isn’t scared to shout about being a bogan from Logan, so why should we be?”

CATHERINE McNeil never liked smiling for the cameras … now she’s grinning on magazine covers in Australia, Paris and the US.

And she has plenty of reason to be pleased the Logan teenager is being hailed as one of the new breed of top models walking the global runways.

At 19, McNeil has a famous name to match the famous face.

She’s even had a touch a controversy catapult her into the news when, three months ago, she was a no-show on catwalks in Milan and Paris and there were rumours she was sick and missing home.

Photo gallery: Catherine McNeil
Gold Coast fashion news, galleries

Like any self-respecting celeb, she didn’t take the gossip pages’ bait and even last week was refusing to comment.

However, in an otherwise candid interview with CoastConfidential, McNeil spoke of her rise to catwalk fame, her love of whipped cream, modelling’s biggest names, home, Superman, the `in’ crowd and that smile.

“I used to hate smiling … now I don’t care,” says McNeil from her New York base, where she’s just finished a substantial editorial for American Vogue with new Superman actor John Hamm.

“I have grown up and become more confident and learnt to move better in front of the camera,” says McNeil of her past 12 months on international catwalks.

“The whole process is much, much easier.”

And magazine editors agree.

McNeil is so sought-after she only need model for high-level campaigns like Gucci and renowned designers such as the iconic John-Paul Gaultier.

“There are not enough superlatives to describe the arrival of this young Australian on the scene,” swooned V magazine’s Stephen Gan, who says McNeil caught his eye when she opened a parade for Givenchy.

“Models with a true star quality are extremely rare but Catherine has it all the grace, the stature, the perfect blend of strength and beauty, and, perhaps most importantly, the brains and sense of humour.”

The past year for McNeil has been especially successful and hectic catapulting the tall and slim self-confessed tomboy into a realm where only a select few reside.

McNeil has amassed an enviable list of parades and campaigns already this year, including Versace, Donna Karan and Givenchy.

She also appears in the Louis Vuitton Cruise campaign and stars in the latest world-wide Dolce & Gabbana campaign alongside one of the original supermodels, Claudia Schiffer.

“You do meet the odd prima dona in the industry but I have to say Claudia is so down to earth and easy going,” says McNeil.

As for Superman, `he seemed very nice’.

But while walking tall alongside supermodels and smiling opposite celebrities may seem par for the course for McNeil nowadays, she rebutts suggestions she is with the `in’ crowd.

“I am not mixing with that crowd. I do my work, see my friends, work constantly and attend the odd event.

“I am really not into that whole celebrity notion … it does not motivate me at all.”

Her modelling agent at Chic Management in Sydney, Kathy Ward, says McNeil’s year ahead also is looking stellar, with news just in that her Hugo Boss campaign has rolled into 2009.

“Catherine appeared on the cover of last month’s Australian Vogue and has already achieved almost every editorial and major campaign opportunity in Australia,” says Ward, who has a soft spot for the seemingly unaffected Queenslander.

It was Ward who helped McNeil relocate from her family’s Logan property, where riding motorbikes was a favourite pastime, to Sydney in January 2006, when she was 16 years old.

McNeil moved into Ward’s home as part of the modelling agency’s strategy to ensure a smooth transition from country to city life. Ward has since had Samantha Harris, a rising young model from the Tweed, stay with her.

McNeil had been in the modelling industry for three years when she moved to Sydney. She won the national Girlfriend magazine model search at age 13, gracing her first glossy cover, and it was then she realised her dream of becoming a motorcycle mechanic had ended.

Also in 2006, McNeil appeared in many of the top Australian magazines Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, marie claire, Madison, Follow, Russh and broke into the UK market with editorial in Grazia.

High-profile advertising campaigns for Peter Alexander, Myer, Cue, Simona, Alannah Hill, Sportsgirl, Colorado and Kookai followed, as did international jobs in Thailand, Bali and New Zealand.

Fast forward to now and McNeil is hanging out for a return to her family’s home for Christmas, hoping to stay for a couple of weeks to relax.

“I have to get back in New York mid-January to get ready for New York Fashion Week,” she says.

“It is so different overseas. Living in New York and working as much as I have over the past couple of years does present its challenges.

“In Australia it is so much easier … less pressure.

“My time in Australia before moving to New York was like working in the industry with training wheels. What I am doing now is much more demanding.”

While McNeil prefers not to comment on the issue, the rumours about the model suffering from ill health or homesickness around October this year did take a toll.

Her grandmother, Sandra McNeil, was quoted as saying Catherine was simply ‘burned out’ and would be back at work soon.

So it’s little wonder when asked if she could have a week off and do absolutely anything she pleased, Catherine’s reply came as …

“Sleep, go to the beach in Australia and see my family.”

Still, McNeil readily admits she has been blessed with success.

“I have been really lucky with my career being at ‘the right place at the right time’, so I am definitely fulfilled on the professional front.

“My dream is to be able to do what I am doing but have my family around me.

“I do want to end up living in Australia … when that will happen I have no idea.”

LEADING Queensland model Catherine McNeil is making a strong recovery from a mystery illness that forced her out of recent top European fashion shows, friends and family say.

The Logan-raised 19-year-old raised eyebrows last month when she pulled out of the Milan and Paris fashion spectaculars, with her agent expanding no further than saying she was “unwell”.

Exhaustion and homesickness had caught up with the globetrotting beauty and she just needed a break from the spotlight, according to industry friends and her grandmother, Sandra McNeil.

“She’s just burned out,” Mrs McNeil said.

She said her granddaughter, who spent at least half the year on the road, was recuperating at her New York base and would be back at work again “soon”.
McNeil’s Sydney rep Kathy Ward, from Chic Model Management, expected McNeil to be back to full health soon.

McNeil appeared on last month’s cover of Vogue Australia and the magazine’s editor-in-chief Kirstie Clements said her absence from Milan and Paris would have no effect on her career.

“She’s at the top of her game so it’s not going to matter,” Ms Clements said.

“She’s one of the Top 10 (models) in the world and really only does the top-level stuff now.”

HOMESICKNESS has been cited as the mystery illness forcing Australian fashion star, Catherine McNeil off Europe’s catwalks. Have your say!Add your comments or read what others are saying
As revealed in Confidential last week, the 19-year-old was forced to pull out of Milan and Paris fashion weeks because of an undisclosed ailment.

However, fashion insiders claim exhaustion and homesickness are to blame.

The self-confessed tomboy from Logan, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, is believed to be prone to bouts of missing her more laidback Aussie lifestyle. Her grandmother Sandra McNeil confirmed the model was taking time off at her New York base to rest.

“She’s just burned out,” Mrs McNeil said, adding her granddaughter would be back at work “soon”.

McNeil’s Chic Model Management representative in Sydney, Kathy Ward, claimed the illness had been “blown out of proportion” despite confirming the situation to Confidential last week.

McNeil was expected to return to work for her many lucrative and high-profile advertising accounts in the coming weeks, she said.

Industry experts were quick to state the time off could prove more than healthy for her state of mind and her career.

Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements, who featured McNeil on this month’s cover, said the model was “at the top of her game.”

“She’s so far up the tree, it wouldn’t matter (if she missed Milan and Paris). She really only does the top-level stuff now and she’s got some big advertising campaigns booked,” she said.
