BRISBANE supermodel Catherine McNeil is going to sit out Paris fashion week with a mystery illness that also forced her to skip shows in Milan.

McNeil first made her name in the Paris fashion scene walking for names including Chanel and Dior.

But her Sydney-based agent Kathy Ward, from Chic Model Management, told Confidential she had to pass on a series of high-profile shows due to a “recurring” illness.
McNeil’s mother was also similarly tight-lipped yesterday and refused to comment on her daughter’s health when contacted by Confidential, saying only that “she’s doing good”, and any further inquiries should be directed to her management.
Ward said yesterday that issues in McNeil’s “personal life” were keeping her off the catwalk. She said that these were not major issues and after some time-out in Europe she was expected to make a return to modelling in her adopted hometown of New York.

While McNeil is sitting out the Paris season, her stablemates from Chic, including Sarah Stephens and 17-year-old Myf Shepherd, were in hot demand.

Shepherd has been picked up by top houses Balenciaga and Christian Dior to appear in their fashion shows this week.

Nick Cave’s son Jethro Lazenby- who has adopted the stage name Jethro Cave – is another young Aussie making it big on the international modeling scene.

FIRST she missed Milan, now Confidential can confirm Catherine McNeil also had to sit out Paris Fashion Week – where she made her name on the international fashion scene.

Aussie agent Kathy Ward, from Chic Model Management, yesterday told fashion editor Jen Melocco the Brisbane beauty would not be working at all in the city of light.

Earlier this week, Ward had hoped McNeil might recover from a “recurring sickness” that also put her out of action for Milan Fashion Week but issues in her “personal life” kept her off the catwalk.

After some timeout in Europe, she is expected to return to modelling in her adopted home of New York.

With McNeil sitting out the Paris season, Chic stablemates including Sarah Stephens and 17-year-old Myf Shepherd are in hot demand.

Personal issues … Top model Catherine McNeil has now had to pull out of the prestigious Paris Fashion Week.

The Aussie beauty was forced to pull out of the penultimate fashion event because she was unwell, her agent confirmed yesterday.

”It’s nothing too bad but she does get this problem every so often. She might be at Paris (for Fashion Week) – we’re not sure.” While she would not be drawn on the exact nature of the illness, Ward said McNeil’s hectic schedule may have played a part.

“She works every day,” she said.

“There’s big demands on these girls. During the show season they work from seven in the morning until two in the morning.”

Earlier this month McNeil, who grew up in Queensland, opened the Diane von Furstenberg show at New York Fashion Week.

She also appeared on the pages of September’s American Vogue and stars on the cover of the November issue of Australian Vogue.

At the tender age of 19, the New York-based model has already featured in a Versace campaign with Kate Moss and modelled for Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and Balenciaga.

IT’S an honour dubbed “first face” and yesterday Brisbane’s top international modelling export Catherine McNeil was granted the title at New York Fashion Week, opening the Diane von Furstenberg show.

With A-list heavy hitters including Vogue editor Anna Wintour, singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria looking on, McNeil was the first model to stride down the runway – a gig reserved for the world’s top catwalk queens.

And the Logan glamour girl stole the show in a trademark von Furstenberg dress, a key piece from the designer’s show considered one of the must-see collections of the week-long fashion extravaganza in Manhattan.

McNeil’s “first face” privilege has only added to her status as one of the industry’s hottest commodities.

She also graces the cover of the September issue of US Vogue, considered by many to be the holy grail of fashion magazines.

“Catherine is really now a supermodel,” said Jodie Bache-McLean, the director of McNeil’s Aussie-based agency Dallys.

“We haven’t seen anyone like her since Elle Macpherson, and in the fashion industry she is among the top 10 most powerful models.”

However the former Logan schoolgirl was just part of the Aussie model invasion of New York this week.

Melbourne’s Abbey Lee Kershaw also walked in the von Furstenberg show.

And Brisbane’s Myf Shepherd strutted out for Marc Jacobs.

Hot pick … Abbey-Lee Kershaw turns heads as she and fellow Aussie Catherine McNeil wow the US.

IT might have only been Catherine McNeil and Abbey Lee Kershaw’s second shot at New York Fashion Week, but the Australian models have already dressed to impress the US A-list.

Kershaw, the daughter of former AFL great Kim Kershaw and one-time Bondi resident, along with self-confessed “bogan” McNeil took the world by storm, fronting campaigns for top global fashion names including Dolce & Gabbana and Gucci.

So it was little surprise to see the catwalk queens turning celebrity heads at the Diane von Furstenberg show at New York Fashion Week HQ, Bryant Park, fashion editor Jen Melocco said.

Uma Thurman, Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria were among stars to watch the hippy chic-inspired collection paraded by our feted fashionistas, who “are only doing high profile shows this time,” Aussie agent Kathy Ward of Chic Models said.

CATHERINE McNeil might have once labelled herself a “bogan from Logan”, but that’s not the way the world saw her yesterday as she strutted her stuff on the Paris catwalk.

McNeil made a dramatic entrance for top French fashion house Christian Lacroix in a jet black lace sheath and ruffled gown, stunning the haute couture crowds.

It proved a busy day for the 19-year-old Queensland-born model who had earlier wowed them at Chanel, then later for Givenchy, reports fashion editor Jen Melocco.

She also trod the catwalk for Christian Dior on Monday and is set to step out for Jean Paul Gaultier today.

While the world might be clamouring for her talents according to this down-to-earth Aussie, there’s not much to the glamour gig.

“Shoulders back, stand up straight, move your hips a bit and swing your arms, but not too much. Oh, and don’t fall over,” she explained on her last visit home this year.

SELF-proclaimed “Bogan from Logan”, model Catherine McNeil, may have the world at her feet, but her heart remains firmly in the Sunshine State.

“I want to buy a house on the Sunshine Coast,” the Queensland supermodel told The Sunday Mail last week.

The green-eyed beauty lives in Manhattan, and has been captivating the catwalks of Paris, New York and Milan, but she returned home for a photo shoot as the new face of Australian swimwear label Seafolly.

“It was great being back home as we shot on Lizard Island and I still love Australia, there’s no question about that,” she said.

Seafolly managing director Anthony Halas was full of praise, describing McNeil as the most significant brand ambassador in their 33-year history and “an international brand coup”.

CATHERINE McNeil is living up to her reputation as one of the world’s hottest models.

Signed up as the brand ambassador for Australian swimwear label Seafolly, she has also been given the seal of approval by Vogue’s legendary New York magazine editor, Anna Wintour.

That’s according to McNeil’s New York-based agent Stephen Lee, who had just come from a meeting with Ms Wintour when he was contacted by The Sunday Telegraph.

See Catherine McNeil in action here.

“In the meeting, Anna said she wants Catherine to be an absolute, total Vogue girl,” Mr Lee said.

“No Harper’s or anying else - just Vogue. Anna says Catherine epitomises everything that Vogue wants to stand for now.”

Seafolly MD Anthony Halas backs up the praise.

“Catherine McNeil is the most significant brand ambassador signing in Seafolly’s 33-year history and is an international brand coup,” he said.

McNeil, who said she was enjoying living in New York, said the sizzling shoot was great fun.

“It was great being back home,” she said. I still love Australia, there’s no question about that.”
